Doug got quite a photography lesson at this game. My initial reaction to the
gym was that it had wonderful lighting (relatively speaking). But, the gym
fooled the light meter on my Nikon F5. The pros out there will tell you that it
only rarely happens. Notice how the exposure is perfect in some shots and
under-exposed in others. Methinks it has to do with whether the background is a
plain white wall or the darker bleachers. Will have to go to the camera's
instruction manual to fix this. (Instruction manual? Something a real man rarely
does.)
(Yo, Doug. This one has a white background and is not underexposed. Yes, but
notice how the entire left side of the photograph is dark. The meter in the
camera looks at over 1,000 different points in the frame to determine the total
overall exposure.)
This was pure bonehead on my part. I like to stand on the side of the gym
that the team is on so that I am not walking in front of the spectators.
However, in this case I should not have been shooting into the light coming in
from the doorway.
Notice how nice the exposure is on the red uniform when the background is not
a white wall.
The white wall was not so much of a problem here, but it is also a more
close-up shot, i.e. the background takes up less of the total frame.
What was I thinking? (I was not thinking at all.)
